The 5 Rules for Drinking Tequila

What are the five rules of drinking tequila you ask? Look no further than the August Issue of Denver Life Magazine. Costa Tequila Founder Stephen Gavula walks you through the do’s and dont’s of enjoying the world’s favorite spirit.

#1 Drink it straight up
Take time to get to know the varieties of tequila's by drinking them neat or on the rocks. Once you’re familiar with the flavor profiles, you will be better equipped to incorporate your favorites into recipes for margaritas and cocktails.

#2 Use the right glassware
Avoid using a shot glass to give the tequila room to breathe. A copita-style glass allows oxygen in and gives the aromas space to concentrate. Also, make sure to pour enough tequila in your glass to get the best aromas and flavor profiles - you need at least an ounce to get the full effect.

#3 Let it rest
Aroma is a huge part of the tequila tasting process, and those smells need some time to settle into your glass before your first sip. While you wait, you can look at the tequila and take note of the color and consistency.

#4 Choose wisely
Find a tequila made with 100% agave. Most tequila on the market today is made from 100% Blue Weber agave, but there are some forms of tequila called ‘Mixto’ that are 51% agave and 49& sugar and additives. To prevent a next-day hangover, focus on the 100% tequilas.

#5 Be in a good place
The memories we make when we drink tequila are just as important as what’s in the glass. It’s easy to reach for tequila after a long day of work, but if you’re trying a new tequila for the first time, the best pairing is a good headspace and an enjoyable environment.
